Diamond Ring Buying Guide and Advice: What to look for in a diamond (Page 4)
I've included a basic scale below. For comparison purposes, a .25 carat diamond is 4.1 mm in width, a .50 is 5.2 mm in width, a .75 is a 5.8 mm in width, and a 1 carat diamond is 6.5 mm in width (looking from the top). (Be sure to double check the sizes in case your computer screen or monitor distort the actual size, so use the picture as more of a comparison between the sizes - measure with a ruler to get the exact size). Also keep in mind that because carat weight is the weight and not the size that some diamonds that are the same weight might be bigger or smaller (width wise) depending on how they were cut. And trust me, I know they look smaller than you might think here, but a .5 and .75 carat are actually quite big on a finger.
I've also included three pictures on the next page from the Blue Nile website that show a 0.5 carat, a 0.75 carat, and a 1.0 carat diamond ring on a finger (due to the distortions on some monitors depending on your settings, this might give you a better idea). The 0.5 is the first one, the 0.75 the one in the middle, and the one below that is the 1.0 carat diamond.
